The Colombo to Kandy train in late 2026

The upcountry railway came back in October 2026 and stopped again three weeks later. Here is where the line stands, where it ends short of Kandy, and how to do a Kandy day trip meanwhile.

Cyclone Ditwah hit Sri Lanka in late November 2025 and tore up the main line to the hills: landslides, washouts and rockfalls between Colombo and Kandy and far beyond. For ten months no train climbed to Kandy at all.

This post sums up what we found in Sri Lankan news and railway notices as of late October 2026. The situation changes week by week, so every claim below carries its date.

The quick answer

As of 30 October 2026, no train runs from Colombo to Kandy. Trains from Colombo Fort to Peradeniya and Gampola restarted on 2 October 2026, but Sri Lanka Railways suspended the Rambukkana to Peradeniya and Gampola section from midnight on 25 October because of a landslide near Kadigamuwa. Even when trains run, they stop at Peradeniya: the Kalu Bridge into Kandy is still being rebuilt. For a day trip, go by road.

Is the Colombo to Kandy train running in October 2026?

No. As of 30 October 2026 the upcountry line is suspended between Rambukkana and Peradeniya, and no train has reached Kandy station since Cyclone Ditwah.

The comeback lasted three weeks. Trains from Colombo Fort to Peradeniya and Gampola restarted on 2 October 2026 after about ten months, as Sri Lanka Railways announced. Three days later the first office train from Peradeniya hit fallen earth and rocks and derailed on the climb above Rambukkana (Newswire, 5 October 2026).

Services came back, and the slope near Kadigamuwa kept moving. The Daily Mirror reported on 25 October 2026 that the Railway Department had suspended all trains between Rambukkana and Gampola via Peradeniya from midnight that day, until further notice. Passengers with reserved seats can claim a full refund at any station. No restart date had been given when we checked on 30 October.

What did Cyclone Ditwah do to the upcountry railway?

It damaged the main line at close to a hundred places between Colombo and Kandy in late November 2025, and cut the line to Badulla in many more.

The worst stretch is the climb from Rambukkana to Kadugannawa, where the track clings to steep hillside. The Morning covered the long repair job; the railway counted 97 damaged locations on the route from Maradana to Kandy alone. Some were washed-out embankments, others whole hillsides on the rails.

Repairs on a slope do not make the slope stable. That is why the October rains, the second inter-monsoon, keep pushing soil back onto the line. The railway station masters' union said the line reopened before the building research institute had signed off; the transport minister answered that the decision was collective (Ada Derana). Either way, a section that closed three times in three weeks is not one to build a day trip on.

Skip the railway lottery: your own car and driver to the Temple of the Tooth and back the same day.

Why do trains stop at Peradeniya instead of Kandy?

The Kalu Bridge (Kalu Palama, the Peradeniya Black Bridge) between Peradeniya and Kandy is still being rebuilt, so even when trains run, Peradeniya is the end of the line.

The old iron bridge over the Mahaweli at Peradeniya carries the only track into Kandy. Newsfirst wrote on 6 September 2026 that services would restart to Peradeniya while the bridge work went on. On 2 October the transport minister said the work was moving fast and announced a second, parallel railway bridge, with plans and designs still being drawn up (Newswire). He gave no date.

Officials have talked about trains to Kandy and a full Colombo to Badulla line by the end of 2026 since February (Newswire, 26 February 2026). Heavy rain has already slowed the bridge. Our view: treat any December 2026 date as a hope, and check the news the week you travel.

How do you get from Peradeniya to Kandy when trains do run?

By tuk-tuk, taxi app or local bus: Peradeniya is about 6 km from central Kandy, roughly 20 to 30 minutes in traffic.

Peradeniya station sits next to the Royal Botanic Gardens, which makes the forced change less painful: plenty of travellers walk the gardens first. From there, a tuk-tuk or a PickMe or Uber car takes you along the Peradeniya road into town. Buses run the same road to the Goods Shed bus stand by the Kandy railway station; flag one on the main road.

If you were going by public transport anyway, the intercity air-conditioned buses from Bastian Mawatha in Pettah to Kandy Goods Shed run all day and take about 3.5 to 4 hours each way (Rome2rio). They are the one public option that worked all through the closure.

Is the Kandy to Ella train running?

Only the top half. Nanu Oya to Ella and Badulla has run since 20 June 2026; Kandy to Nanu Oya stays closed for cyclone repairs as of late October 2026.

The famous scenic ride is split in two. The section past Gampola and Nawalapitiya, and the stretch from Hatton to Nanu Oya, were still under repair in late October 2026 (BYC.lk status page, 28 October 2026). What does run is the best-loved part: Nanu Oya (for Nuwara Eliya) over the Pattipola summit and Haputale to Ella, about 2.5 to 3 hours.

None of this works as a day trip from Colombo. Nanu Oya is a long drive into the hills, so the Ella train belongs in a multi-day route, not a return ticket from the capital.

Train or car for a Kandy day trip from Colombo right now?

Car. With the railway suspended and the bridge into Kandy unfinished, a private or shared tour by road is the only way to see Kandy and be back in Colombo the same night.

Kandy is about 115 km from Colombo on the A1, with no expressway yet; guests on the Kandy tours report a 2.5 to 3-hour drive each way. Day tours run 9 to 12 hours. The private Kandy and Pinnawala trip is $71 per person for the largest group size (rated 5.0, 9 to 11 hours); the shared Kandy day tour is $70 per person in a van of up to 15. Temple of the Tooth tickets are extra on both, LKR 2,000 to 2,500.

When the trains do return, a Fort to Peradeniya ride plus a tuk-tuk is a fine way to go one way, with a car back. Not before. Our Kandy day trip guide covers the stops and the fees.
