Kandy from Colombo

The last royal capital of Sri Lanka, set round a lake in green hills, with the temple that keeps the Buddha's tooth relic. Drums at puja time, the royal palms of Peradeniya and tea country on the way repay the long drive.

Kandy is about 115 km from Colombo on the A1. There is no expressway yet: the Central Expressway's Kadawatha to Mirigama section is about half built and due in 2028. Guests on the tours report 2.5 to 3 hours each way, and with Colombo traffic about 3 hours is what to plan for.

UNESCO listed the Sacred City of Kandy in 1988. Day tours from Colombo run 9 to 12 hours, and most stop at the Pinnawala elephants, a spice garden and a tea factory on the way.

The quick answer

Go by private car or a tour: about 3 hours each way and a 9 to 12-hour day. The train is no option in late 2026: trains only reached Peradeniya after the cyclone repairs, and a landslide closed the line beyond Rambukkana on 25 October. The Temple of the Tooth costs LKR 2,000 to 2,500 for foreigners, with shoulders and knees covered. The private Kandy and Pinnawala trip starts at $71 per person, the shared van at $70.

How long is the drive from Colombo to Kandy?

About 3 hours each way for 115 km on the A1, more on weekday mornings and holidays.

The road climbs through Kadawatha, Warakapola and Kegalle, then up the Kadugannawa pass into the hills. Pinnawala is a short detour near Kegalle, which is why so many tours stop there. Guests describe a 2.5-hour drive on a good day. On a bad one, one guest called the traffic and the driving around them the worst part of the trip and advised against doing Kandy in a day at all.

The tours reflect that: the private Kandy and Pinnawala trip runs 9 to 11 hours, the shared Kandy day tour 10 to 12 hours from a 6 a.m. start.

Can you take the train from Colombo to Kandy in 2026?

Not in late October 2026. There is no through train: trains reached only Peradeniya after the cyclone repairs, and a landslide has closed the line beyond Rambukkana since 25 October.

Cyclone Ditwah damaged the upcountry line in late November 2025. Services from Colombo Fort to Peradeniya and Gampola came back on 2 October 2026 after about ten months, while the Kalu Bridge between Peradeniya and Kandy stayed under repair (Newsfirst). Then a landslide near Kadigamuwa stopped trains between Rambukkana and Peradeniya from midnight on 25 October, until further notice (Newswire).

For a day trip, take the car. The scenic upcountry train is a separate adventure for when the line reopens; our Kandy train update tracks it.

What are the Temple of the Tooth rules and entry fee?

Foreigners pay LKR 2,000 to 2,500 at the gate. Cover shoulders and knees, take off shoes and hats, and keep quiet in the shrine rooms.

The private tour's listing gives the ticket as USD 8 (Rs 2,500), plus an optional temple guide at Rs 2,000. The shared tour includes a temple guide. The temple is open from 5.30 a.m. to 8 p.m., with puja at 5.30 a.m., 9.30 a.m. and 6.30 p.m., when drums play and the doors of the relic chamber open. Day tours reach Kandy in the afternoon, between pujas.

  • Dress: long trousers or a skirt below the knee and covered shoulders. White or pale clothes are a nice touch.
  • Shoes: left at the shoe counter outside; a small tip is normal.
  • Respect: never pose with your back to a Buddha image, and cover any Buddha tattoo. Sri Lanka takes both seriously.
  • The relic: you don't see the tooth itself; it is kept in a golden casket in the inner chamber.

Is Peradeniya Botanic Garden worth the stop?

Yes, for an hour or two: 147 acres of royal palm avenues, orchids and a giant Javan fig, about 6 km before Kandy. Foreign adults pay roughly LKR 3,000 to 3,500.

The Royal Botanic Gardens are open every day from 7.30 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Department of National Botanic Gardens). Tickets are cash at the gate. The orchid house and the royal palm avenue are the highlights; on a hot afternoon the shade alone is worth the fee.

The shared tour gives the gardens 1.5 hours, ticket not included. The private tour skips them in favour of Pinnawala, but you can ask to swap. One guest on the shared tour warned that lunch at the gardens was poor value, so eat elsewhere.

Should you visit Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage?

Think twice. It is on most Kandy tours, but its welfare record has been criticised for years, and smaller sanctuaries do better by the elephants.

Pinnawala belongs to the Department of National Zoological Gardens. Foreign adults pay USD 17.70, children USD 8.85, and it opens 8.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. The herd goes down to the Ma Oya river to bathe from 9.15 to 11.45 a.m. and from 2.15 to 3.45 p.m. Extras are sold on site: a fruit basket for feeding at Rs 590, ten minutes of bathing at Rs 885, a ten-minute walk at Rs 1,180.

Those paid interactions are the problem for critics. A 2010 Born Free report questioned welfare there, and Responsible Travel won't send clients. On a private tour you can swap it. One guest did: "He let us customize our trip to include an ethical elephant rescue center, a tea factory, and some incredible vistas." Look for a sanctuary with no riding, no bathing with guests and no chains on display.

Private or shared Kandy tour: which is better?

Private from $71 for two or more, or if you want to change the stops. Shared from $70 if you travel alone and want a temple guide included.

Are the spice garden and tea factory stops a sales pitch?

Partly. Entry is free and the walk-through is interesting, then comes the shop. You can say no, or skip the stop.

Both Kandy tours include a tea factory, and the private one adds a spice and herbal garden. The tea factory is the better stop: you see the rolling and drying, then taste. At the spice garden, the tour of cinnamon and cardamom bushes ends with a counter of ayurvedic oils at shop prices. One guest on the shared tour found the day a little sales heavy, with a feeling of obligation to buy and to tip the local guides.

Tell the driver at pickup which stops you want to skip. On a private tour that is your call, and it gives you more time at the temple.

What else can you see in Kandy in one day?

Kandy Lake, the viewpoint above town and the big white Bahirawakanda Buddha. Most tours fit only the lake and the viewpoint after the temple.

The lake is a 3.4 km loop next to the temple; walk part of it while the driver parks. The viewpoint on the hill road gives the postcard shot of the lake with the temple roof. A Kandyan dance show is an evening event, after most day tours have left. If you want all of it, stay a night and go home by road the next day.
