Sigiriya and Dambulla in a day

A shared van with a driver-guide drives you north to the Dambulla cave temple and then to Sigiriya, the 5th-century rock fortress with frescoes and giant lion paws. It's the cheapest seat to Lion Rock from Colombo, if you accept a 6 am start and a late return.

Sigiriya & Dambulla Day Trip from Colombo

About this experience

Apple Vacations collects you from your Colombo hotel around 6 am in a shared air-conditioned van, with up to 15 travellers. The road north to Dambulla and Sigiriya is about 175 km with no expressway, so guests report 3 to 4 hours to the first site and returns between 9 pm and 10:45 pm. The listing says 12 to 14 hours. Believe it.

On the way there is a breakfast stop at Cafe Amakie, then 45 minutes at the Dambulla cave temple (249 steps up, a guest counted), a look at the Golden Temple below, and about two hours at Sigiriya: the water gardens, the frescoes, the lion paws and the climb to the summit. A local guide helps at Sigiriya in English, German, French or Spanish. The last stop is Oakray Woodcarvings, a shop.

What the low price leaves out: tickets and food. Sigiriya costs USD 35 for foreign adults (the listing says LKR 11,000, by card or USD cash) and Dambulla about LKR 2,000, in rupees or by card only. Breakfast and lunch are paid at restaurants. Guests also say the guide offers an optional jeep safari for about USD 45 to 50 a person. If half the van says yes, everyone gets back later.

  • Two UNESCO sites in one day, Dambulla and Sigiriya

What guests say

★★★★★

The day is really cool, but also really, really long. We started at 545am with a 3 hour drive to the cave temples, which require walking up 249 steps. [...] All in all, I’d recommend the tour but def be prepared.

The group was small. The tour guide Mr. Silva was very knowledge, extremely helpful and never pushy. For the non-essential parts of the trip, he gave us options and respected the groups choices and decisions.

A great trip. Krish and the team were awesome. Everything was super organized and the sights were well worth the drive! Would def recommend for solos.

Now, climbing Sigiriya rock was a little difficult due to humidity and heat. I recommend doing this tour in December - January, when Sigiriya region is more cool.

Tips before you book

  • Bring cash in rupees for Dambulla: card works, US dollars don't. Sigiriya takes card or USD.
  • Want to skip the ticket queue? Sigiriya e-tickets are on the Central Cultural Fund site.
  • Decide on the safari before you leave. If the group splits, the non-safari half waits in the car.
  • Carry a hat, sunscreen and two litres of water for the climb. A helper on the steps asked one family for USD 20.
  • Say early if you want to skip breakfast or eat fast. One guest lost 90 minutes at a restaurant.
