The calendar matters more than people expect on a Colombo day trip. Galle and the south coast share Colombo's weather. Sigiriya and Dambulla sit in the dry zone with their own seasons, and Kandy is in the hills between them.
Below is the 2026-27 season month by month, from November 2026 to October 2027. It is a guide to typical patterns, not a forecast: for the days you travel, the Department of Meteorology is the source.
The quick answer
December to March is the best window for Galle and the south coast. From May to September the southwest monsoon soaks Colombo and Galle, and Sigiriya and Dambulla become the better pick. October and November, the second inter-monsoon, can bring heavy afternoon storms anywhere, so start early. Check meteo.gov.lk the day before.
When are the monsoons in Sri Lanka in 2026-27?
Four seasons: the second inter-monsoon in October and November, the northeast monsoon from December to February, the first inter-monsoon in March and April, and the southwest monsoon from May to September.
The Department of Meteorology uses these four seasons. The southwest monsoon (Yala) brings rain to the west and south coasts, Colombo and Galle included, and to the western hills, wettest in May and June. The northeast monsoon (Maha) rains mostly on the north and east, and showers reach the Cultural Triangle around Sigiriya from about November to January.
The two inter-monsoons are the wildcards. Rain can fall anywhere, usually as thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. The dates shift by a few weeks from year to year; nobody can tell you in October exactly when the 2026-27 northeast monsoon will set in.
| Month | Colombo and Galle coast | Sigiriya and Dambulla | Kandy | Best day trip |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nov 2026 | Inter-monsoon storms | Showers start | Wet | Colombo city, early starts |
| Dec 2026 | Drying out | Northeast showers | Showers | Galle |

| Feb 2027 | Dry | Dry | Dry | Any: Sigiriya, Galle, Kandy |
| Mar 2027 | Dry, hot | Dry, hot | Dry | Any, early start |
| Apr 2027 | Afternoon storms | Hot, some storms | Afternoon storms | Sigiriya or Kandy, early |
| May to Jun 2027 | Southwest monsoon, wettest | Dry | Showers | Sigiriya and Dambulla |
| Jul to Sep 2027 | Monsoon, lighter | Dry | Showers | Sigiriya, or Galle on a clear day |
| Oct 2027 | Inter-monsoon storms | Storms | Wet | Colombo city, morning trips |
Is November a good month for day trips from Colombo?
It is the riskiest month of the year. The second inter-monsoon can drop heavy rain anywhere, and cyclones from the Bay of Bengal are possible in November and December.
Cyclone Ditwah struck at the end of November 2025, and its damage is still closing roads and railways in late 2026. October 2026 showed what the inter-monsoon does to the hills: repeated landslide warnings for Kandy and other central districts, and three earth slips near Kadigamuwa that shut the upcountry railway (our Kandy train update).
It is not a write-off. Rain in this season tends to build in the afternoon, so a trip that starts at 6 or 7 a.m. gets the dry hours. Keep a half-day option in reserve, like the Colombo tuk-tuk tour, and book trips with free cancellation: every tour on this site cancels for a full refund up to 24 hours before.
When is the best time for a Galle day trip?
December to March, when the west and south coasts are at their driest and the sea is calm. May to September is the wet season on this side of the island.
Galle sits 116 km down the Southern Expressway and gets the same weather as Colombo. In the dry months the stilt fishermen are out, the ramparts are walkable in the late afternoon, and a swim at Jungle Beach is a real option. The all-included Galle day tour runs about 12 hours and builds that swim in.
In the southwest monsoon the trip still runs, and the rain often comes in heavy bursts rather than all day. The sea is the problem: rough, with strong currents, so treat beach time as a maybe. The fort itself is free to walk in any weather. More in our Galle day trip guide.

February to September is the safest stretch. The Cultural Triangle is roughly driest from May to September, the exact months the coast is wet.
That makes Sigiriya the natural rainy-season trip from Colombo. The catch is heat. About 1,200 steps up an exposed rock is hard work by late morning, and the tours leave Colombo around 6 a.m. for a reason: it is 4 to 5 hours each way.
From about November to January, northeast monsoon showers reach the area. The climb gets slippery and the views can vanish in cloud. If you have a choice in those months, go to Galle instead. The shared Sigiriya and Dambulla trip costs $45 per person, entry tickets extra (Sigiriya USD 35, Dambulla about LKR 2,000). Our Sigiriya day trip guide goes through the timing.

The cheapest way to Lion Rock and the Dambulla caves, best between February and September.

Kandy catches some rain from both monsoons. January to March is the most reliable; October to December is the wettest and the most landslide-prone.
Kandy sits at about 500 m between the wet and dry zones, so it rarely has a fully dry month and rarely a washout one. Showers here are usually short. The bigger seasonal risk is the road and rail through the hills after heavy rain, which is what closed the railway in October 2026.
Since the train to Kandy is not running, the trip is a 3-hour drive each way. In the wet months, leave early and accept that the viewpoint stop may be cloud. The best day trips guide compares Kandy with the other options.
Where do you get a reliable forecast for a Colombo day trip?
The Department of Meteorology at meteo.gov.lk for daily forecasts and warnings, and the NBRO for landslide warnings in the hills.
We do not publish forecasts, and long-range claims about a wet or dry 2026-27 season are guesses. What works: read the Department of Meteorology forecast the evening before, and for Kandy or the hills, check the landslide early warnings from the National Building Research Organisation.
Then talk to your driver. Local operators reroute around flooded roads every season, and a WhatsApp message the night before often tells you more than any app. If the forecast looks bad, use the free cancellation up to 24 hours before and move the trip.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best month for a day trip from Colombo to Galle?
December to March, when the west and south coasts are driest and the sea is calm. January and February are the most reliable.
Is it worth visiting Sigiriya during the southwest monsoon?
Yes. From May to September the Cultural Triangle is roughly at its driest while Colombo and Galle get the rain, which makes Sigiriya and Dambulla the best day trip of those months.
Does it rain all day during the monsoon in Sri Lanka?
Usually not. Rain tends to come in heavy bursts, often in the afternoon, with dry spells in between. Early starts help in every season.
Where can I check the weather forecast for Sri Lanka?
The Department of Meteorology at meteo.gov.lk publishes daily forecasts and warnings; the NBRO issues landslide warnings for hill districts.
