Booking choice: The shared Sigiriya and Dambulla trip, from $45 per person. Check dates Tour details
Sigiriya, or Lion Rock, is the citadel King Kashyapa built in the late 5th century (477 to 495 AD), a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982. It sits 170 to 180 km from Colombo by road, with the Dambulla cave temple about 20 km away, and every day tour pairs the two.
Day tours from Colombo run 10 to 14 hours. Here is how the day works, what you pay at the gates and which tour suits whom.
The quick answer
Yes, Sigiriya works as a day trip from Colombo, but plan on a 6 a.m. pickup and a 12 to 14-hour day with 8 to 10 hours of driving. The ticket is USD 35 for a foreign adult (the shared tour listing says USD 36, or LKR 11,000), paid on site, never in the tour price. The climb is about 1,200 steps. The shared van from $45 is the cheapest way; a private car from $68 adds a jeep safari.

Is a Sigiriya day trip from Colombo worth it?
Yes, if Sigiriya is the one thing you came for and you have no nights inland. If you can sleep near the rock, do that instead.
The case for going: the frescoes, the mirror wall, the lion paws and the view from the summit are unlike anything else on the island, and Dambulla's painted caves come free with the drive. The case against: you spend twice as long in the car as on the sites, and you climb in the hottest part of the day.
Guests who loved it say the same thing. "This was a very long trip, so plan a rest day afterwards. And you'll be sore from climbing all those steps." Another: "Fantastic trip be prepared for a very long day though."

Check dates for the shared Sigiriya and Dambulla tripHow long is the drive from Colombo to Sigiriya?
4 to 5 hours each way for about 170 to 180 km, through Kurunegala and Dambulla. Traffic leaving Colombo decides the rest.
Part of the route can use the Central Expressway between Mirigama and Kurunegala, but the Colombo end is still under construction, so the first hours crawl. One guest on the private tour wrote that the day took 14 hours because of traffic. Here is the shared tour's day as the listing gives it, after a pickup around 6 a.m.:
| Stop | Time there | Ticket |
|---|---|---|
| Breakfast stop on the road | 30 minutes | Pay for what you eat |
| Dambulla Cave Temple | 45 minutes | About LKR 2,000, not included |
| Golden Temple of Dambulla | 5 minutes | Free |
| Sigiriya Lion Rock | 2 hours | USD 35, not included |
| Woodcarving workshop | 20 minutes | Free (a shop) |
That is under four hours at the sites in a 12 to 14-hour day. Back in Colombo by 19:00 or 20:00 is a good day; later if the roads are bad.

How much is the Sigiriya ticket in 2026?
USD 35 for a foreign adult and about half for children aged 6 to 12, paid at the gate. Some sources and the shared tour listing say USD 36, or LKR 11,000.
The ticket is sold by the Central Cultural Fund and includes the Sigiriya museum. The shared tour's listing says you can pay by card or in US dollars cash. You can also order online through the CCF e-ticket service and collect the ticket at the counter with your receipt number; counters are open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Every other fee on a Sigiriya day:
| Site | Foreign adult | How to pay |
|---|---|---|
| Sigiriya Lion Rock | USD 35 (listing: USD 36 / LKR 11,000) | Card, US dollars or rupees |
| Dambulla Cave Temple | About LKR 2,000 (some 2026 sources: LKR 3,000) | Rupees or card; no US dollars |
| Pidurangala Rock | LKR 1,000 | Rupees at the temple gate |
| Minneriya safari | Park about USD 25 plus taxes, jeep extra | Agree the total in writing first |
At about LKR 330 to the dollar in October 2026, a Sigiriya and Dambulla day costs about USD 41 per adult in gate fees alone. That is close to the price of the shared tour itself.
How long does it take to climb Sigiriya?
About 1,200 steps. Most people take 2 to 3 hours from the gate to the summit and back down; fit walkers do the climb itself in 30 to 45 minutes.
The path runs through the water gardens, up to the mirror wall, then a spiral staircase to the painted maidens of the frescoes. On the Lion Terrace the staircase goes between the giant paws to the summit palace ruins. One guest counted: "you have ro climb 1202 steps to get to the top".
- Heat: the rock bakes from late morning. A Colombo day trip arrives around midday, so carry two litres of water and take the shade breaks.
- Hornets: nests hang near the Lion Staircase. Signs ask for quiet; keep it.
- Who should skip it: the listing rules out pregnant travellers and anyone with back or heart problems, and asks for moderate fitness. Those travellers can walk the gardens and the museum instead.
- Vertigo: the metal stairways up the rock face are caged but airy. Don't look down.

Shared or private: which Sigiriya tour should you book?
Shared from $45 if you travel alone or on a tight budget. Private from $68 for two or more, with a hotel pickup and a jeep safari among wild elephants.
Side by side, straight from the listings:
| Shared van | Private car | |
|---|---|---|
| Tour | Sigiriya and Dambulla shared | Sigiriya, Dambulla and safari |
| From | $45 per person | $68 per person |
| Length | 12 to 14 hours | 10 to 12 hours |
| Group | Up to 15 travellers | Your group only |
| Pickup | Colombo city only | Any Colombo or Negombo hotel, or the airport |
| Included | Driver-guide, guide help at Sigiriya, water, fruit and king coconut when available | Air-conditioned car, driver, water |
| Not included | Entry fees, meals, tips | Entry fees, jeep hire, tips |
Both prices drop per person as the group grows, so a couple on the private tour pays more than $68 each; check with your real numbers. On the shared tour, one guest found the food stops the weak point, so pack snacks.
Travelling alone? The shared van is the cheapest seat to Lion Rock, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
Check dates for the shared Sigiriya and Dambulla tripShould you climb Pidurangala instead of Sigiriya?
Climb it as well, if you can, not instead. Pidurangala costs LKR 1,000, takes about an hour up and back, and gives the classic view of Lion Rock itself.
Pidurangala is the rock next door, reached through a Buddhist temple at its foot. The path is rougher than Sigiriya's: steps, then a scramble over boulders for the last ten minutes. There are no frescoes and no palace, just a flat summit with Sigiriya across the forest. Sunrise is the famous time, and it is out of reach from Colombo.
Neither tour here includes Pidurangala: the private one runs Sigiriya, a jeep safari and Dambulla. On a private car you can ask to add it and pay the LKR 1,000 yourself, but something else has to go. Sigiriya, Pidurangala, Dambulla and a safari in one day from Colombo is not realistic.

Is the Minneriya safari add-on worth it from Colombo?
Only if elephants matter more than time. The jeep and park fees are paid on the day, and guests on the private tour paid LKR 29,000 to 44,000.
Minneriya, or Hurulu Eco Park when the herds move, can put you among dozens of wild elephants. Guests rate it: "The high point was our jeep safari in Hurulu, where we encountered a small elephant herd, with a tusker at very close range." The price is the problem. Park entry runs about USD 25 per foreign adult plus taxes, and half-day jeeps are quoted at LKR 11,000 to 15,000. Two guests called what they paid on the day a scam: one paid LKR 29,000 (about $94) for under 1.5 hours.
Agree the full jeep and park price with the operator before the day, and ask how long you get in the park. Expect to reach Colombo after 22:00.

Explore the Sigiriya and safari trip Tour detailsWhat should you wear and bring for Sigiriya?
Light clothes that cover shoulders and knees for Dambulla, walking shoes, a hat, water, your passport and rupees in cash.
- Dress: shoulders and knees covered and hats off at Dambulla, as at every Buddhist temple. Shoes come off at the cave entrance; the rock is hot by noon, so bring socks.
- Passport: the shared tour's listing asks for a valid passport on the day.
- Cash: Dambulla takes rupees or a card, not dollars. If you need an ATM, tell the driver early, as the listing advises.
- Food: breakfast and lunch are not included on either tour. Snacks help on a 14-hour day.
- Next day: plan an easy one. A market tour and cooking class in Colombo is a good fit.
