Galle Day Tour from Colombo, All Included

About this experience

Lanka Tour Host, which trades as Sanota Walkers, picks you up at 7:00 am in an air-conditioned car and heads south on the Southern Expressway. Galle is 116 km away. The expressway part is quick, but door to door guests report about 2.5 hours each way, so the 12-hour day is really eight hours of sights and four in the car.

The listing packs in eight stops: the stilt fishermen, Jungle Beach (bring swimwear, there is time for a swim), an hour inside Galle Fort, a gem shop, Hikkaduwa beach, the small Tsunami Photo Museum, Meetiyagoda and the Kosgoda turtle hatchery. Lunch, bottled water and the entry fees come with the package you choose at checkout. Drinks are extra. It's private, so nobody else rides with you, and guests say the driver drops or swaps stops on request.

Some caveats. The gem shop and Meetiyagoda (moonstone mines) are shopping stops; you can say no. The path down to Jungle Beach is steep and rocky, and one older guest called the climb back up "pure hell". And the stilt fishermen mostly pose for photos now, for a tip. The price is a flat $120 per person with at least two people per booking, so a solo traveller pays for two.

  • Eight stops on the south coast in one private day
  • Lunch and entry fees in the package, not paid on the day
  • An hour in Galle Fort, a UNESCO site since 1988
  • A swim at Jungle Beach near Unawatuna
  • Kosgoda turtle hatchery on the drive back
  • Flat price per person, it doesn't climb for couples

Loved seeing the stilt fishermen who even caught a fish as we watched, seeing cinnamon growing on a tree at the spice garden; the Dutch fort; jungle beach; tsunami photo centre, the jewelry making but my favourite was the turtle centre.

Tips before you book

  • Wear sandals with grip or trainers for Jungle Beach. A guest warned that without the right footwear 'it'll be a struggle'.
  • Carry small rupee notes. Fishermen, turtle guides and the tsunami museum all expect a tip or donation.
  • Check what your package covers before you pay: lunch and entry fees depend on the option you select.
  • If a stop doesn't interest you, say so in the car. Guests say the driver drops or adds stops on request.
  • Get the WhatsApp number of the operator. One guest in 2022 had a no-show and only got a reply four hours later.
